LET ME EXPLAIN YOU A THING

do you know how hard it is to be a teacher in the current economy? do you know what it’s like to frantically prepare students for standardized tests that contain literally nothing you feel like they need to learn but you have to ensure that they score well on them otherwise not only could you lose your job but also the school could lose funding

which means that funding for resources like

subsidized lunches

computers for the lab

the fucking librarian’s fucking salary

could dry up?

do you know what it would be like to be hired expecting twenty children in a class but then half of your colleagues get fired so you suddenly have forty children in a class? and then if you’re an average middle or high school teacher you have five or six or sometimes seven classes?

yeah in case you can’t do math because you were too busy making fun of your teacher to pay attention, that’s 200 or 240 or fucking 280 students. and at least 75% of them turn in every assignment. and then you have to grade them, knowing that if you don’t assign x amount of papers your class could get audited and, unless you have tenure (which some teachers now don’t get until seven years after they have the job - that’s SEVEN FUCKING YEARS OF NOT KNOWING IF YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE A JOB THE FOLLOWING YEAR) you could lose your job if the administration doesn’t find your class adequate?

also, on top of grading papers, some districts require teacher regularly undergo retraining for students with disabilities, students with english as a second language, sexual assault counseling, bullying prevention, and community relations? and they’re supposed to do all of this on an average salary of $45,000 a year (which is only slightly more than one year of university, aka in order to pay for their undergrad student loans plus their grad school loans they would have to do nothing but pay down loans with their salaries for six fucking years and not buy food or shelter)?

also, side note: teachers do not ever “get the summer off.” they’re planning the shit out of the school year, and attending training days, and researching ways to make their teaching more effective, and handling panicking parents whose students will be entering their classes next year. “summer off” my ass. teachers work as hard during the summer as they do during the school year.

people on this website complain about being stressed out for a lot of things - some serious, some not.

Yeah most teachers actually teach summer school because well, shit salaries anyway for all the work..and more and more training for extraneous things because the school doesn’t provide extra staff (because they’re not funded etc etc etc) for things like that…for example at my high school we had plenty of guidance counselors and a college application dept and everything - but that’s because my school had 99% graduation rate. I would imagine most schools don’t have that privilege and then it becomes cyclical - with a lower graduation rate, it doesn’t “seem necessary” to pay counselors for college advice/help and without the counselors less students are going to be equipped to even go to college. Not to mention there are so many schools out here in “bad” underfunded neighborhoods where kids are violent and teachers are essentially fearful of their students, because those kids know the teachers aren’t allowed to touch them. One of my teachers had said that at the school he worked at before, the security they hired was essentially dropouts of the school itself - so that meant gangsters and other trouble makers being in charge of “securing” the school they probably didn’t like anyway. He also said teachers pretty much rotated for sex ed/health classes - meaning everybody had to go through extra training and essentially teach something extra out of their expertise without extra compensation. The poor guy was grateful every day to have his job at my high school - even with half the kids knocked out on their desks it was a better environment than where he came from.

I heard about this tragic story of a 9-month-old baby girl being raped and killed and was shocked and disgusted to find that people were quicker to blame the single mother (as well as immigration) than the sick fuck responsible for ending an infant’s life. This breaks my heart. This child’s life was not taken because the mother was single or because the suspected murderer is latino; this child’s life was taken because there is a screwed up fucking rapist murderer out there who was raised a rape culture that is more eager to point fingers at a single mother and undocumented citizens than at a rapist baby killer and our own disgusting culture.

My heart goes out to the mother and family of this child. This is a tragic loss.

I’m sure a woman who puts on a bindi because it’s pretty does not mean to offend anybody else, and I’m sure a woman who wears it because of her background does not feel like it is a bad thing to wear for a different reason - but the former might do well to understand its meaning and significance rather than maintaining an ignorant viewpoint.
